AIL discusses malnutrition and rapid urbanization at UN Regional Report 2018
Agrivo International Ltd was invited as a panel speaker for the United Nations (UN) launch of the UN Regional Report 2018. Held in Bangkok, Thailand, we are proud to be the only agricultural portfolio company in Asia invited to be a part of the panel of a closed-door discussion entitled "Asia and the Pacific Regional Overview of Food Security and Nutrition" organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the World Food Program (WFP), UNICEF and the World Health Organization (WHO).
We discussed about malnutrition and rapid urbanization which causes malnutrition that includes obesity where there is an inability for people to access healthy and nutritious food. As we continue to urbanize, more people are consuming processed food. Also, progress at reducing undernourishment has slowed tremendously. FAO estimates that the number of hungry people has barely changed the past two years, making it increasingly difficult to achieve the Zero Hunger target of SDG2. The situation is similarly challenging in nutrition and health areas, where a large majority of countries in the region risk missing the SDG and World Health Assembly targets. These developments in food security and nutrition are at odds with the region's continuing high level of economic growth.
We therefore must bridge this gap through innovative means, ensure that the poorest people in societies feel there is improvement to their access to food and for the middle income earners and working class, food must remain safe and clean and affordable. This problem may be solved through the use of technology, collaboration among the private sector, working closely together with farming co-operatives and the close cooperation with respective government ministries.
